3. Flow control
Although both valves can be used to regulate flow, the butterfly valve has a greater advantage in applications where continuous modulation is required. The ball valve is more suitable for on/off operations, although there are ball versions with V-ports designed for more precise flow control.
4. Maintenance and durability
Ball valves, having fewer components exposed to the fluid, usually require less maintenance and have a long service life even in demanding conditions. Butterfly valves, while also robust, may require more frequent inspection of the disc seals, especially in fluids with solid particles or abrasives.
5. Cost
In small and medium diameters, ball and butterfly valves have competitive prices. However, from certain diameters (generally from 3" upwards), butterfly valves become noticeably more economical, which can represent significant savings in large-scale projects.
