Valves for the Pharmaceutical Industry — The Right Choice for Each Area of Your Plant
The most frequent mistake in specifying valves for pharmaceutical plants is not under-specifying — it's over-specifying: buying SS316L hygienic valves with USP Class VI certification and validation documentation for a general utility steam line or for the chiller cooling water system, where these features add no value and only unnecessarily increase costs. The key is to correctly map each area of the plant and its criticality level, and select the appropriate valve family for each.
At Cematic, we supply valves for the entire pharmaceutical plant: from the sterile product line in the filling room to the cooling tower water system in the machine room. We advise you free of charge on which valve applies to each point, what technical documentation is available for each family, and when a quality industrial valve is the correct and sufficient option without needing certified hygienic valves.

Red Zone — Direct Product Process: SS316L Hygienic Valves
The highest criticality areas of a pharmaceutical plant are those where the valve comes into direct contact with the drug, its raw materials, or the pharmaceutical water used as a solvent or vehicle. In these zones, there is no room for negotiation on requirements: 316L stainless steel as the minimum material, USP Class VI elastomers, polished internal surface, and dead-leg-free design are mandatory by GMP.
What Cematic can supply for these zones:
- SS316L ball valve with Tri-Clamp connection: For points of use in purified water (PW) loops and non-sterile product transfer lines. Body and ball in SS316L, PTFE or EPDM seats, internal surface Ra ≤ 0.8 µm. Available with pneumatic actuator for automated CIP sequences. Available documentation: SS316L material certificate, elastomer (EPDM or PTFE) data sheet with reference to USP <87>/<88> from the elastomer manufacturer.
- SS316L clamp or wafer butterfly valve: For discharge of large-diameter formulation tanks and return of distribution loops. Polished SS316L disc, EPDM or silicone seat. Available documentation: material certificate, elastomeric seat data sheet.
- SS316L clamp diaphragm valve: For points where total separation of the mechanism from the process fluid is required. The EPDM or PTFE diaphragm is the only element in contact with the product. Available documentation: body material certificate, diaphragm data sheet with manufacturer's USP reference.
- SS316 inclined seat valve with pneumatic actuator: For clean steam control in autoclaves and SIP systems, and for hot water control in WFI loops. Millions of cycles of guaranteed durability. Available documentation: material certificate, EPDM or PTFE data sheet.
⚠️ Important note on certifications: Cematic supplies verified quality SS316L hygienic valves with the technical material documentation available from our manufacturers. However, we currently do not have our own product certifications such as USP Class VI (in vivo biocompatibility test), 3-A Sanitary Standards (audited design certification) or EHEDG (European hygienic design certification). If your validation protocol requires these certificates issued by independent bodies for the specific product, we will transparently inform you what documentation we can supply and what would require an alternative certified source. For many validation projects, the elastomer manufacturer's technical data sheet with reference to USP <87>/<88> is sufficient for the IQ protocol — we advise on a case-by-case basis.
Orange Zone — Auxiliary Process Systems: High-Quality Industrial Valves
CIP (Clean-In-Place) systems are critical process systems for plant hygiene but are not in direct contact with the finished drug — their fluids are cleaning solutions (NaOH 1–3%, HNO₃ 0.5–2%, hydrogen peroxide, chlorinated disinfectants) that circulate through process lines to clean them before production. Valves in these systems must resist the chemical aggressiveness of cleaning reagents, but do not require USP Class VI certification or Ra ≤ 0.8 µm.
- SS316 ball valve with EPDM or PTFE seat (DN15–DN100): For CIP solution distribution lines. 316 stainless steel resists NaOH and HNO₃ at typical CIP concentrations. EPDM is compatible with both reagents — check with PTFE if phosphoric acid or concentrated hydrogen peroxide is used.
- PFA anti-corrosive valve (DN15–DN100): For CIP solutions with concentrated hydrogen peroxide (>15%) or other strong oxidizers that attack 316 stainless steel. PFA lining is the only safe material for these aggressive reagents. See collection →
- SS316 wafer butterfly valve with EPDM (DN50–DN200): For large-flow CIP return and rinse water distribution in the plant's cleaning network.
Yellow Zone — Industrial Process Steam: Standard High-Temperature Valves
Industrial steam — generated in conventional boilers with water treated with scale and corrosion inhibitors — is not pharmaceutical clean steam. It cannot come into direct contact with the product but is used indirectly: heating tanks through steam jackets, preheating process water before reverse osmosis, sterilization of non-critical materials, and space heating. Valves for industrial steam do not require clamp connections or Ra ≤ 0.8 µm surfaces, but must withstand the temperature and pressure of the steam.
- SS316 or bronze inclined seat valve with EPDM (DN15–DN65): For automatic control of industrial steam in indirect heating equipment. The same millions of cycles of durability as in direct pharmaceutical applications, but in a threaded body version without a clamp connection — significantly more economical. See collection →
- WCB flanged gate valve ANSI 150/300 (DN50–DN300): For isolation of industrial steam distribution headers and main connections to process equipment. The WCB gate valve is the standard for medium and high-pressure steam where cost is prioritized over hygienic design.
- WCB threaded or flanged globe valve: For manual control of steam flow in indirect heating equipment without automation.
- WCB swing check valve (DN25–DN200): Protection of boilers against backflow and prevention of condensate return to steam lines.
Yellow Zone — Compressed Air: Tightness without Need for Hygiene
Compressed air in a pharmaceutical plant has two distinct qualities with very different valve requirements:
- Instrument air (dry, oil-free air): Powers the pneumatic actuators of process valves. Instrument air distribution valves must ensure hermetic sealing — any leak is a loss of energy and pressure for the actuators — but do not require special materials. SS316 NPT threaded ball valve (DN15–DN50) is the universal standard.
- Process air (in contact with product): Used for bioreactor aeration, purging product lines, and as a pressurization gas for sterile transfer tanks. In this case, the air does come into contact with the product and must be pharmaceutical grade (0.2 µm filtered). Valves in these lines must be SS316 with clean seats — the flanged or clamped SS316 ball valve is suitable.
Green Zone — Cooling Water and Utilities: Economical Industrial Valves
Cooling water systems (cooling towers, chillers, closed loops) and general plant utilities (general process water, compressor oils, sanitary water) have no contact with the drug and do not require hygienic materials. The correct selection in these zones is the most reliable and economical industrial valve for the specific fluid — over-specifying with hygienic SS316L in these zones is an unnecessary expense without any regulatory benefit.
- Cast iron butterfly valve with EPDM (DN50–DN600) with electric actuator: For cooling water control in chiller circuits, condensers, and cooling towers. The electric actuator with 4–20 mA signal allows integration with the plant's BMS (Building Management System) for temperature control of spaces and process equipment. See collection →
- Ductile iron gate valve with EPDM wedge (DN80–DN400): For isolation of cooling water circuit sections during equipment maintenance. The most economical and reliable option for this low chemical aggressiveness service.
- Ductile iron dual plate check valve (DN80–DN400): Protection of cooling water pumps against backflow. The soft closure of the dual plate is ideal for high-flow water systems where water hammer from sudden closure can damage the installation.
- WCB or SS316 flanged ball valve (DN25–DN200): For isolation of equipment connections in the machine room — air compressors, pumps, heat exchangers, and auxiliary equipment.
Green Zone — Industrial Gases: Hermetic Sealing Mandatory
Nitrogen (N₂) for purging tanks and transfer systems, carbon dioxide (CO₂) for pH adjustment in bioreactors, and oxygen (O₂) for aeration are industrial gases whose valves must ensure total Class VI tightness — not for hygiene reasons but for safety and gas purity reasons. The ball valve is the only acceptable option for industrial gas isolation.
- SS316 NPT threaded ball valve with PTFE seat (DN15–DN50): For distribution of N₂, CO₂, and instrument compressed air in the plant. PTFE resists all these gases without degradation. Class VI tightness prevents gas losses which represent both an economic cost and a safety risk in the case of O₂ and CO₂ in enclosed spaces.
- SS316 ball valve with NC (normally closed) pneumatic actuator: For automatic gas supply cut-off upon a leak detector signal, emergency stop, or automated product line purging sequence. The normally closed position ensures that in case of control system failure, the gas supply is interrupted — the correct fail-safe position for pressurized gases.

How we work with pharmaceutical plants in Mexico
We understand that engineering and maintenance projects in pharmaceutical plants have two simultaneous interlocutors with distinct priorities: the process engineer seeks the correct technical solution for each fluid and operating condition, and the quality team verifies that this solution meets GMP requirements and has the necessary documentation for validation. At Cematic, we address both needs:
- For process engineering: We advise on the selection of the correct valve type, material, and configuration for each fluid and condition in your plant. We clearly distinguish when an industrial valve is sufficient and when a specialized hygienic one is required — avoiding both underspecification and unnecessary expense in overspecification.
- For quality and validation: We transparently inform about what technical documentation is available for each valve — material MTR, elastomer data sheets with references to pharmacopeia standards, dimensional drawings, IOM manuals — and when independent product certification (USP VI, 3-A, EHEDG) is not available in our current offering, so the validation team can make an informed decision on whether the available documentation is sufficient for their specific protocol.
- For purchasing and projects: Formal technical quotation with detailed material specification and documentation on the same business day. We handle both individual valve maintenance orders and complete valve lists for expansion or new plant projects.
