Ball Valve with Pneumatic Actuator — Full Tightness Automation for Frequent Cycles
The ball valve with pneumatic actuator represents the preferred automation solution when the process demands two simultaneous conditions that few combinations can meet: absolute hermetic sealing (no seat leakage in the closed position) and high response speed (opening or closing in 1 to 3 seconds). The perforated sphere of the ball valve, when rotated 90°, seals against PTFE or metallic seats with Class VI tightness according to ANSI/FCI 70-2 — the most demanding sealing standard available in industrial valves. The pneumatic rack and pinion actuator delivers that quarter turn with enough torque to operate the valve even under maximum differential pressure, without performance degradation after millions of cycles.
At Cematic, we supply complete ball valve and pneumatic actuator packages in the materials, diameters, and configurations most demanded by the Mexican industry. Each assembly arrives assembled, aligned, and tested in our workshop before shipment: functional open/close test, seat tightness test, verification of limit switch signals, and speed regulator adjustment.
Why choose a ball valve and not a butterfly valve for automation?
Both are quarter-turn valves that can be automated with the same type of pneumatic actuator, but they have different characteristics that determine which is correct for each application:
| Criterion | Ball Valve with Actuator | Butterfly Valve with Actuator |
|---|---|---|
| Sealing tightness | ✅ Class VI — zero leakage (bubble-tight) | ⚠️ Class IV–V — controlled leakage allowed |
| Flow path | ✅ Full bore — no restriction | ⚠️ Reduced — disc in the fluid path |
| Line pigging | ✅ Compatible (full port) | ❌ Not compatible |
| Pressure drop when open | ✅ Minimal (very high Cv) | ✅ Very low |
| Economical diameters | ✅ DN15 to DN100 (½"–4") | ✅ DN50 to DN600 (2"–24") — more economical for large sizes |
| Gases and vapors | ✅ Ideal — hermetic seal mandatory | ⚠️ Limited — unacceptable seat leakage |
| Severe corrosive fluids | ✅ PFA/anti-corrosive version available | ⚠️ Limited in available materials |
| High pressure (ANSI 300+) | ✅ Available up to ANSI 600 | ⚠️ Limited in high pressure |
| Cost in large diameters | ⚠️ Higher than butterfly in DN150+ | ✅ More economical in DN150 and larger |
Practical rule: Specify a ball valve when total tightness, gas compatibility, or working pressure exceeds what a butterfly valve can guarantee. For large diameters with liquid fluids and acceptable Class IV tightness, the butterfly valve is more economical.
Available valve materials for automation
Stainless Steel 316 — NPT Thread (½" to 4")
The most demanded combination in industrial processes. Body and ball in SS316, virgin PTFE seats, EPDM packing. NPT threaded connection for direct installation in threaded piping without flanges. Full bore. Available in 2-piece (weldable) and True Union versions — the latter allows the entire valve to be removed from the line without cutting pipe or disconnecting the actuator, greatly simplifying field maintenance.
- Typical applications: Chemical, pharmaceutical, food, purified water, clean industrial gases, process instrumentation
- Diameters: ½" to 4" (DN15 to DN100)
- Temperature: -20 °C to +180 °C with PTFE
Stainless Steel 316 — ANSI 150 Flanges (1" to 8")
For main process lines where pressure, diameter, or maintenance frequency justify a flanged connection. Body in CF8M (equivalent to SS316), ball and stem in SS316, PTFE or metallic seats for high temperature. Face-to-face according to ASME B16.10.
- Typical applications: Petrochemical, chemical industry, pharmaceutical, high purity water, low pressure steam, safety systems
- Diameters: 1" to 8" (DN25 to DN200)
- Pressure: ANSI 150 standard; ANSI 300 available
Carbon Steel WCB — ANSI 150 and 300 Flanges (2" to 12")
For water, oil, natural gas, steam, and general non-corrosive industrial fluid services where budget is a determining factor. Body in ASTM A216 WCB, trim in 13Cr or SS316 as required. The most economical option for large diameters in non-corrosive services.
- Typical applications: Oil and gas, process water, process steam, fuels, industrial oils
- Diameters: 2" to 12" (DN50 to DN300)
PVC — True Union (½" to 4")
For systems where metal is not an option: chlorinated water, diluted acids, moderate alkalis, technical irrigation, and processes where weight or metal corrosion are determining factors. Body and ball in rigid PVC, PTFE seats, EPDM gaskets. The True Union design facilitates field maintenance without cutting pipe.
- Typical applications: Drinking water, automated irrigation, swimming pools and water parks, chlorine dosing, light chemical industry
- Maximum temperature: 60 °C — not for use with hot water
Anti-corrosive with PFA Lining (½" to 6")
Metal body with internal PFA (Perfluoroalkoxy) lining that completely protects it from contact with the fluid. The solution for automating the control of concentrated acids, strong alkalis, aggressive solvents, and oxidizers that would destroy any conventional metal valve. Solid PTFE or PFA ball. Virgin PTFE seats.
- Typical applications: Chemical industry, petrochemical, water treatment with aggressive reagents, semiconductor manufacturing, mining with leaching reagents
Hygienic Clamp — Stainless Steel 316L (½" to 4")
Body in polished SS316L Ra ≤ 0.8 µm, polished ball without retention areas, FDA-approved EPDM or silicone seats, Tri-Clamp connection for quick tool-free disassembly. Compatible with CIP cleaning and SIP sterilization with steam up to 134 °C. The automation option for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries.
- Typical applications: Pasteurizers, filling systems, pharmaceutical reactors, automated CIP systems, bioreactors
Pneumatic actuator configurations
Spring Return — Normally Closed (NC / Fail-Close)
The most demanded configuration in process valve automation. Compressed air opens the valve against the force of the internal spring. When air supply is lost — due to compressor failure, signal loss, or emergency — the spring closes the valve automatically. The safe failure position is CLOSED. Mandatory in applications where uncontrolled opening is unacceptable: dosing of hazardous chemicals, feeding raw materials to reactors, safety interlock systems.
Spring Return — Normally Open (NO / Fail-Open)
Compressed air closes the valve against the spring. In case of supply failure, the valve opens automatically. The safe failure position is OPEN. For cooling, lubrication, and services where interruption of flow due to a failure would cause greater equipment damage than flow continuity.
Double Acting (DA / Fail-Last)
Compressed air operates in both directions — opens by air and closes by air. No internal spring. Greater torque available in both directions. The valve maintains its last position in case of supply failure (fail-last). Ideal for large diameter or high differential pressure valves where the required torque exceeds the capacity of a spring-return actuator of the same size, and for applications where fail-last is the correct safety mode.
Accessories included in Cematic packages
- Solenoid valve 4/2 or 5/2 way: 24 VDC, 110 VAC or 220 VAC. Mounted on the NAMUR port of the actuator without intermediate piping. IP65 standard; IP67 and ATEX Ex on request.
- Limit switch box: 2 SPDT microswitches (or inductive sensors) for open and closed position feedback to the PLC. Red/green visual indicator. IP67 standard.
- Speed regulators x2: Independent control of opening and closing speed to prevent water hammer and reduce mechanical impact on actuator stops.
- Filter-regulator with manometer: Conditions the network air to the correct working value of the actuator, filters moisture and particles that damage the actuator diaphragm.
- Manual override: Emergency operation without compressed air or electrical signal, without disassembling the unit from the line.
- ISO 5211 coupling: Standardized interface between valve and actuator. Ensures compatibility and allows replacing the actuator without touching the valve or piping.
Quick sizing guide — Torque required by size and material
The operating torque of a ball valve depends on the diameter, differential pressure, seat type, and fluid. The actuator must always be selected with a minimum safety factor of 1.25 over the maximum torque of the valve. As a reference at 6 bar air pressure and standard conditions:
- DN15–DN25 (½"–1"): Actuator 052 — torque 10–20 Nm
- DN32–DN50 (1¼"–2"): Actuator 063–083 — torque 25–60 Nm
- DN65–DN80 (2½"–3"): Actuator 105 — torque 80–140 Nm
- DN100 (4"): Actuator 140–150 — torque 150–250 Nm
- DN150 (6"): Actuator 210–300 — torque 300–500 Nm
- DN200 (8"): Actuator 400+ — torque 600–1,000 Nm
Note: For high differential pressures, viscous fluids, or valves with metallic seats, the required torque may be significantly higher. Our team performs the exact calculation with your application data at no additional cost.
Main industries and applications
- Chemical and petrochemical industry: Automatic isolation of reactors and pressure vessels, control of hazardous reagent dosing, safety interlocks (ESD) activated by gas detectors or high pressure signals. The total tightness of the ball valve is mandatory when the fluid is toxic, flammable, or at high pressure.
- Oil and gas: Block valves in wellheads, production manifolds, gas metering stations, corrosion inhibition systems, and methanol injection. WCB and SS316 flanged ANSI 150–300 versions with ATEX solenoid for classified areas.
- Food and pharmaceutical industry: Automated tank filling and emptying sequences, ingredient control in formulation, isolation valves in CIP systems where total tightness between batches is a safety requirement.
- Compressed air and industrial gases: The ball valve is the only acceptable option for automated isolation of compressed air, nitrogen, CO₂, and oxygen lines — the butterfly valve does not guarantee the hermetic seal required for gases.
- Water treatment and chemical dosing: Automatic control of hypochlorite, pH acids, and coagulant dosing. PVC versions for chlorinated water; anti-corrosive PFA for aggressive reagents.
- General manufacturing: Automated plant utilities: circuit purging, equipment isolation for maintenance, control of water and gas supplies in production lines.
- Fire protection systems: Ball valves with normally open pneumatic spring return actuators in deluge and sprinkler systems, where signal loss (failure) must result in the opening of the suppression system.
- Aquaculture and precision irrigation: PVC versions for automating pond gates and technical irrigation sections with control from programmers or agricultural PLCs.
