3-Way Ball Valve in 316 Stainless Steel — ANSI 150 Flange, L and T Port, 2" to 8"

The SS316 3-way ball valve with ANSI 150 flange combines the diverting and mixing functionality of a 3-way valve with the corrosion resistance of 316 stainless steel — the right choice when the fluid is seawater, saline solutions, moderate chemicals, purified water, or any fluid that would attack the carbon steel body of the WCB version. With a single ball and a 90° turn, it diverts flow between two destinations (L port) or mixes two streams into a single outlet (T port), replacing the two 2-way valves that would otherwise be required.

Available in diameters from 2" to 8" — the widest range in Cematic's flanged 3-way ball valve line — with an ISO 5211 mounting pad for automation with a pneumatic or electric actuator.

SS316 vs. WCB in flanged 3-way valves — when to specify each

Criterion 3-Way Ball SS316 ← This product 3-Way Ball WCB
Body Corrosion Resistance ✅ High — SS316 resists chlorides, dilute acids, seawater Only non-corrosive fluids for WCB
Main Fluids ✅ Seawater, moderate chemicals, purified water, corrosive processes Gas, steam, petroleum, water without chlorides
Relative Cost Higher — SS316 more expensive than WCB ✅ Lower — WCB more economical in large diameters
Available Diameters ✅ 2" to 8" — wider range 2" to 6"
Maximum Temperature with PTFE 200 °C 150 °C

L Port vs. T Port — specifying the correct one is critical

L Port — Diverting Between Two Destinations or Selecting Between Two Sources

The L-port ball always connects only two of the three ports — never all three simultaneously. A 90° turn changes which two ports are connected.

  • 0° Position: Port A connected to Port B. Port C blocked.
  • 90° Position: Port A connected to Port C. Port B blocked.

Use L port for: diverting between two destinations, selecting between two sources, equipment bypass, instantaneous switching between main and backup source.

T Port — Mixing, Simultaneous Distribution, or Recirculation

The T-port ball in the central position connects all three ports simultaneously. In extreme positions, it connects only two.

  • 0° Position (central): All three ports A, B, and C connected — mixing or simultaneous distribution
  • 90° Position: Port A to Port B only
  • -90° Position: Port A to Port C only

Use T port for: mixing two streams, recirculation vs. process, distribution to two destinations with simultaneous position, bypass with simultaneous startup.

Not sure which port your process needs? Consult us before ordering — it's the most frequent specification error in 3-way valves.

Construction Materials

  • Body: CF8M stainless steel (ASTM A351) — cast equivalent of SS316 with 18% Cr, 8–12% Ni, 2–3% Mo. Corrosion resistance for seawater, saline solutions, dilute acids, and moderate alkalis.
  • Ball: SS316 stainless steel with L or T bore, mirror polished finish
  • Stem: SS316 stainless steel with PTFE packing
  • Seats: Virgin PTFE — tight, leak-free shutoff in every operating position
  • Connection: ANSI 150 raised face (RF) flanges, ASME B16.5 drilling
  • Actuator Mount: Integrated ISO 5211

  • ⚠️ Chlorides >1,000 ppm at elevated temperature: risk of pitting in CF8M — consult
  • ❌ HF, H₂SO₄ >30%, ClO₂: use PFA anti-corrosion valve →

Automation — specific considerations for 3-way valves

  • Failsafe position defined from design: The single-acting actuator moves the valve to a predefined position (A or B) upon loss of air or signal. Define which circuit must remain active in case of failure before ordering — this decision determines the NC or NO configuration and the actuator's mounting position.
  • Do not use in intermediate position: The 3-way ball valve is ON/OFF — positions between 0° and 90° rapidly wear out the PTFE seats. For continuous proportional mixing, use a 3-way globe valve with a positioner.
  • Higher operating torque in DN150 and DN200: 8" valves at process pressures have significant operating torque — Cematic sizes the correct actuator with a verified safety factor for each diameter and pressure.
  • Position feedback to PLC: The limit switch box confirms position A (0°) and position B (90°) — critical when the two circuits handle different fluids to prevent cross-contamination.

Main Industries and Applications

  • Chemical industry — corrosive reagent diversion: Selection between two destinations for aqueous reagents, dilute acids, and alkalis in general chemical plants. The SS316 body resists fluids that would corrode WCB — making this the only viable option for diverting corrosive process lines in large diameters.
  • Seawater and coastal systems: Flow diversion in seawater distribution systems in desalination plants, coastal cooling systems, and marine aquaculture facilities. SS316 resists seawater chlorides without pitting in continuous service.
  • Industrial reverse osmosis systems: Selection between purified water distribution circuits, diversion between membrane modules, and bypass of pretreatment equipment. SS316 does not contaminate purified water with metal ions.
  • Water treatment plants: Diversion of treatment reagent flows (coagulants, flocculants, pH adjusting acids and bases), selection between distribution lines, and bypass of filters and process equipment. SS316 is compatible with typical water treatment reagents.
  • Pharmaceutical industry — utilities: Distribution of purified water to multiple points of use, selection between distribution loops, and bypass of equipment in utility areas where SS316 is the specified material and hygienic finish is not required.
  • Food industry — water distribution: Diversion in process water and CIP solution distribution networks in large diameters (DN150 and DN200) where a hygienic clamp ball valve is disproportionate and flanged SS316 is sufficient for the specific service.
  • Mining — process reagents: Diversion of flotation reagent solutions, dilute leaching acids, and process fluids in beneficiation plants. SS316 covers the chemical compatibility of the most frequent reagents at process concentrations.
