316 Stainless Steel Ball Valve — NPT Thread, Three-Piece, PTFE or RPTFE Seat

The three-piece SS316 ball valve with NPT thread is the most versatile isolation component for industrial installations in diameters from ½" to 3": complete bubble-tight shutoff in a 90° turn, corrosion resistance of SS316 for seawater, moderate chemicals, industrial gases, and general process, direct installation by threading onto pipe or equipment with standard NPT thread, and a three-piece design that allows full access to the valve's interior for inspection, cleaning, or seat replacement without removing it from the line.

The integrated ISO 5211 mounting pad on all models ensures direct compatibility with any quarter-turn pneumatic or electric actuator on the market — no adapters or mechanical modifications needed.

The advantage of the three-piece design in threaded valves

The three-piece design is the main differentiator of this product from one-piece or two-piece threaded ball valves. The central body houses the ball and seats, and two side caps with the NPT threaded connections are screwed onto both sides of the body. By unscrewing the side caps, the central body with the ball and seats becomes fully accessible — without removing the valve from the line, without cutting the pipe:

  • Complete visual inspection: Check the condition of the ball and seats without disassembling the valve from the pipe. Detect wear, buildup, or damage before they cause a leak in service.
  • Field seat replacement: PTFE or RPTFE seats are replaced by opening the central body — without buying a complete new valve. The cost of a seat kit is a fraction of the valve's cost. In installations with many service points, the accumulated savings in maintenance are significant.
  • Cleaning of deposits: Fluids with dissolved solids or fine particles can generate deposits on the seats that prevent a bubble-tight seal. The three-piece design allows for complete manual cleaning of the interior without disassembling the valve.
  • Maintenance without system shutdown: The side caps are unscrewed with the valve closed — the central body is removed for maintenance while the caps remain screwed to the pipe, containing the system. Intervention time is reduced from hours (complete valve replacement) to minutes (seat replacement).

Available Seats — PTFE and RPTFE

Virgin PTFE — The Standard Seat

Virgin PTFE is the standard seat for the SS316 threaded ball valve. Its characteristics:

  • Chemical resistance: Compatible with virtually all fluids that SS316 resists — diluted acids, alkalis, organic solvents, industrial gases, water, and general process fluids
  • Temperature: -20 °C to +180 °C in continuous service
  • Sealing: Bubble-tight seal — the smooth surface of PTFE against the polished SS316 ball creates a perfect seal
  • Friction: Very low coefficient of friction — the ball rotates on the PTFE seats with minimum operating torque, allowing the use of compact actuators
  • First choice for: Water, aqueous solutions, industrial gases, low-pressure steam, diluted acids and alkalis, low-aggressiveness organic solvents

RPTFE (Reinforced PTFE) — Greater Mechanical Resistance

RPTFE is PTFE reinforced with glass or carbon fiber. It offers the same chemical properties as virgin PTFE with greater hardness and resistance to mechanical wear:

  • Greater surface hardness: Better resists abrasion from fluids with fine suspended particles that would prematurely degrade virgin PTFE
  • Less deformation under load: Virgin PTFE can flow (creep) under seat load in continuous high-pressure and high-temperature service — RPTFE has less tendency to permanent deformation, maintaining sealing force over more operating cycles
  • Higher differential pressure: Recommended for valves that frequently operate with high differential pressure in the closed position
  • First choice for: Fluids with fine suspended solids, high differential pressure service, frequent opening and closing cycles, installations where seat lifespan is critical
  • Limitation: Slight reduction in tightness compared to virgin PTFE in low differential pressure conditions — for low-pressure services where absolute tightness is required, prefer virgin PTFE

Automation — ISO 5211 for pneumatic or electric actuator

The integrated ISO 5211 mounting pad allows direct mounting of quarter-turn actuators without adapters. For the SS316 threaded ball in the most common diameters (½" to 2"), compact actuators with lower torque are sufficient — Cematic verifies the correct torque for each diameter and process pressure.
