Collection: Cematic Valve Positioners | Digital HART, Smart, and Electropneumatic

The positioner is the device that ensures a control valve occupies the exact position commanded by the PID controller—correcting in real time disturbances caused by stem friction, differential pressure variations, and temperature changes that would otherwise cause position error and loss of control quality. Cematic offers three families of positioners for industrial valves: the smart digital positioner with HART protocol and advanced valve diagnostics, the smart positioner with Profibus-PA communication for field network integration, and the analog I/P electropneumatic positioner for standard applications where simplicity and low cost are priorities. All are available for quarter-turn actuators (ball and butterfly valves) and linear actuators (globe and gate valves), with direct NAMUR mounting on the actuator.

Cematic Valve Positioners — Digital HART, Smart, and Electropneumatic for Precise Process Control

In any process control loop—temperature, pressure, flow, or level—the control valve is the final actuator: the device that translates the controller's signal into physical action on the fluid. The quality of this translation directly determines loop stability, process accuracy, and system energy consumption. The positioner is the component that guarantees this quality: it continuously compares the position ordered by the controller with the actual valve position and instantly corrects any deviation caused by stem friction, packing wear, differential pressure variation, or load changes.

Cematic offers a full range of positioners for every level of technical requirement and project budget: from the smart digital HART positioner with self-diagnosis and valve signature to the analog I/P electropneumatic positioner for standard low-cost applications. All are available for quarter-turn actuators (ball and butterfly valves) and linear actuators (globe and gate valves), in single and double-acting configurations, with direct NAMUR mounting on the actuator.

The three families of Cematic positioners

1. Smart Digital Positioner with HART Protocol — The Most Demanded

The digital HART positioner is Cematic's priority choice for new industrial applications and for modernizing existing control loops. It incorporates a microprocessor, a non-contact Hall effect position sensor, and bidirectional HART communication superimposed on the 4–20 mA loop — meaning that digital diagnostic information travels in parallel to the control system over the same signal cable that carries the control setpoint to the positioner, without the need for additional wiring.

It is the correct positioner when the project requires:

  • Superior positioning accuracy: ±0.1–0.5% of nominal range versus ±1–2% for analog
  • Automatic Auto-Setup in less than 60 seconds without additional tools
  • Continuous valve status diagnosis: valve signature, cycle counter, response time, position histogram
  • Partial Stroke Test (PST) to verify safety valves (ESD) without stopping the process
  • Integration with asset management systems (AMS, PACTware, FieldCare) for predictive maintenance
  • Digital valve characterization: linear, equal percentage, or user-defined curve — without mechanical cams

Available in versions for single and double-acting rotary actuators and for single and double-acting linear actuators. ATEX certified version for installations in classified Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas.

2. Smart Positioner with Profibus-PA Protocol — For Field Networks

The Profibus-PA positioner is the solution for plants with control systems that use Profibus field networks as the standard communication protocol — common in installations with Siemens DCS (PCS 7), ABB (System 800xA), or petrochemical and continuous process plants with established Profibus infrastructure.

Unlike HART — which superimposes digital communication over the existing 4–20 mA analog loop — Profibus-PA completely replaces individual analog signal wiring with a shared two-wire bus where multiple positioners communicate simultaneously, providing significant structural advantages in large-scale installations:

  • Drastic reduction in wiring: A single Profibus-PA segment supports up to 31 field devices (positioners, transmitters, actuators) on the same pair of cables — compared to the dedicated pair of cables per instrument of conventional analog wiring. In a plant with 100 control valves, the savings in wiring, trays, cable glands, and installation hours are crucial to the total project cost.
  • Native digital communication: Communication speed of 31.25 kbps, direct integration into the field layer of the DCS without additional analog-to-digital signal converters.
  • Complete diagnostics: Same diagnostic capabilities as the HART positioner — valve signature, cycles, response time, PST — accessible directly from the DCS control room without a field communicator.
  • Power from the bus: Profibus-PA positioners are electrically powered from the same communication bus — without independent power wiring for each instrument.

When to specify Profibus-PA instead of HART? When the project's DCS has native Profibus-PA support with installed segment couplers, when the volume of control valves justifies the investment in Profibus infrastructure, or when the project or customer specification defines it. For new projects without protocol preference, HART remains the option with the greatest versatility and lowest infrastructure cost.

3. Electropneumatic Analog I/P Positioner — Economical and Reliable for Standard Applications

The analog electropneumatic positioner (also called I/P — current to pressure converter) operates using the nozzle-flapper principle: no microprocessor, no electronic sensor, no communication protocol. The 4–20 mA input signal actuates a precision galvanometer that varies the nozzle opening, generating a proportional pneumatic control pressure. A mechanical feedback mechanism closes the position loop by comparing the actual stem position with the desired one, correcting any deviation in a purely pneumatic way.

It is the right choice when:

  • The project budget is the determining factor, and the control loop does not require advanced diagnostics
  • The DCS or PLC cannot read HART or Profibus-PA data — the analog positioner leverages the full available potential of the control system
  • Maintenance will be performed by plant personnel with basic instrumentation knowledge — manual calibration with zero and span screws, no software or HART communicator
  • An existing analog positioner needs to be replaced with minimal downtime — direct NAMUR installation, calibration in 15–30 minutes
  • The application is a standard temperature or level loop with long time constants where ±1% accuracy is completely sufficient

Why is the smart digital positioner Cematic's priority choice?

The cost gap between an analog and a digital HART positioner has significantly narrowed in recent years, while the benefits of the digital version have multiplied. At Cematic, we recommend the digital positioner as the first choice for three specific reasons:

  • Auto-Setup recoups the cost during initial startup: Manual calibration of an analog positioner requires between 30 and 90 minutes of an instrumentation technician's time with the line shut down. The digital positioner's Auto-Setup does it in less than 60 seconds. In a plant with 50 control valves, the savings in commissioning hours often exceed the price difference between analog and digital.
  • Diagnostics prevent unplanned shutdowns: The digital positioner's valve signature detects stem packing wear, seat wear, and actuator spring fatigue weeks or months before they cause a leak or functional failure. A single avoided shutdown in a continuous process plant recoups the cost of dozens of digital positioners.
  • PST protects the availability of ESD systems: In plants with instrumented safety valves (ESD/SDV), the digital positioner's Partial Stroke Test verifies system functionality without interrupting production — a growing regulatory requirement in Oil & Gas, petrochemicals, and power generation that the analog positioner cannot meet.

Compatibility — rotary and linear actuators

All Cematic positioners are available in versions for the two main types of actuator movement:

For Quarter-Turn (Rotary) Actuators — Ball and Butterfly Valves

The positioner's coupling mechanism converts the rotational motion of the actuator shaft (0°–90°) into the position feedback signal. Mounting is direct on the NAMUR interface of the actuator without intermediate piping. Compatible with single-acting (NC and NO) and double-acting actuators.

  • Coupling rotation range: adjustable from 30° to 90°
  • Interface: NAMUR VDI/VDE 3845 + ISO 5211
  • Compatibility: all pneumatic quarter-turn actuators with standard NAMUR interface

For Linear Actuators — Globe and Gate Valves

The coupling mechanism follows the linear displacement of the actuator stem using an external articulated arm. Compatible with diaphragm actuators (the standard type in globe control valves) and linear cylinder actuators.

  • Stroke range: adjustable from 10 to 100 mm
  • Mounting: on the diaphragm actuator body using a standard yoke bracket
  • Compatibility: diaphragm actuators from major market manufacturers
