válvulas de cuchilla para lodos y sólidos

Collection: Knife Valves

Knife gate valves, also known as gate valves, are the specialized solution for controlling fluids with high solids content, sludge, fibrous pulps, and abrasive slurry. Their bevel-edged sliding gate cleanly cuts through the flow without jamming or clogging, where any other valve would fail. Ideal for mining, wastewater treatment, pulp and paper industry, and chemical processes with solid suspensions.

Knife Gate Valves — Control of Slurry, Sludge, and Fluids with Solids

Knife gate valves, also known as gate valves or guillotine valves, are isolation devices specifically designed to handle fluids that no conventional valve would tolerate: mining slurries, paper and pulp, wastewater with suspended solids, tailings, and abrasive mixtures. At Cematic, we supply knife gate valves in stainless steel, cast iron, and anti-corrosive materials, with manual operation via handwheel or fully automated with pneumatic or electric actuators. Stock available in Mexico City with specialized technical advice.

How does a knife gate valve work?

Unlike ball or butterfly valves, a knife gate valve operates using a flat metal gate with a beveled edge that moves vertically within the valve body. When closing, the knife penetrates the fluid and literally cuts off the flow, pushing particles and fibers aside thanks to the peripheral groove of the seat. When fully open, the gate exits the flow area, leaving an unobstructed full port passage, with minimal pressure drop and no dead zones where solids can accumulate.

This operating principle solves the main problem of conventional valves in services with solids: jamming and premature wear of seats caused by abrasive particles trapped during closing.

Types of knife gate valves available

  • Uni-directional Knife Gate (Lugged / Wafer): Efficient sealing in a single flow direction. The most economical option for standard slurry and wastewater applications. Wafer-type mounting between flanges or with lugs for end-of-line applications.
  • Bi-directional Knife Gate: Resilient peripheral seat that ensures tightness regardless of the flow direction. Ideal for lines where pressure can reverse or in bypass systems.
  • Heavy-Duty Slurry Knife Gate: Constructed with a thicker body, hardened knife, and field-replaceable elastomeric sleeves. Designed for high abrasive load slurry in heavy mining, aluminum, and cement.
  • Bonnetless Knife Gate: Compact design without an upper chamber, which eliminates material accumulation on the stem and reduces maintenance costs. Widely used in the pulp and paper industry.
  • Knife Gate with Polyurethane or Rubber Liner: Interior coated with high abrasion-resistant elastomer, which protects the metal body from direct contact with the fluid and significantly extends service life in mining applications.

Construction materials

  • Body: Cast iron (for general water and non-corrosive sludge services), carbon steel, 304 or 316 stainless steel (for corrosive fluids, food, or pharmaceutical), ductile iron.
  • Knife / Gate: 304 or 316 stainless steel, with optional surface hardening treatment (nitriding, hard chrome plating, or tungsten carbide) for maximum abrasion resistance.
  • Seat: EPDM, NBR, neoprene, polyurethane, or PTFE depending on the fluid. Elastomeric seats are field-replaceable without removing the valve from the line.
  • Stem: Stainless steel with dust and dirt protection via standard stem cover in heavy-duty models.

Typical operating ranges

  • Diameters: DN50 (2") up to DN1200 (48") and larger on request
  • Nominal pressure: PN2 to PN16 in standard models; up to PN25 in heavy-duty slurry versions
  • Temperature: -10 °C to +120 °C depending on selected elastomeric seat
  • Connection: Between DIN/ANSI flanges, wafer or lug type

Main industries and applications

  • Mining: Control of process slurries, tailings, pulps with high solids content, and abrasive fluids in slurry transport systems, thickeners, and filters.
  • Pulp and Paper / Cellulose: Handling of fibrous pulps where clean cutting without blockages and easy cleaning between production cycles are required.
  • Wastewater Treatment: Isolation of lines with blackwater, activated sludge, and dewatered sludge in municipal and industrial plants.
  • Chemical Industry: Dense fluids, solid suspensions, and viscous mixtures where the chemical resistance of the body and seats is critical.
  • Power Generation: Handling of suspended ash, cooling water with solids, and waste fluids in thermoelectric plants.
  • Cement and Aluminum: Control of flows of slurries, lime, bauxite, and other highly abrasive materials typical of these processes.
  • Food Industry: Stainless steel versions with FDA-approved EPDM or PTFE seats for handling fruit pulps, vegetable oils, and by-products with solids.

Operation and automation

Knife gate valves are typically operated with a manual handwheel for small diameters or low frequency of operation. For frequent cycles or integration into control systems, Cematic offers the complete package with a double-acting or single-acting pneumatic actuator and an electric actuator with position signal. Also available with a pneumatic or electro-pneumatic positioner for proportional control applications in SCADA or PLC systems.

Advantages over conventional gate valves

Although both are linear isolation valves, the knife gate valve outperforms the gate valve in services with solids for several reasons: its thin, beveled gate does not create material retention cavities, the self-cleaning seat is renewed with each opening, the weight and cost are considerably lower in large diameters, and seat maintenance can be performed in the field without removing the valve from the piping.
